Carrie Mathison - Homeland
Olivia Pope - Scandal
It's pretty easy to see why I put Carrie Mathison on this list, even if you've only seen a promo for Homeland. Carrie, a CIA agent with intense intelligence but suffering from bi-polar disorder cuts a fascinating presence in the Showtime drama. She's incredibly stubborn, to the point of getting herself into extreme danger most of the time, but she sticks to her guns when she knows she's right. And it turns out? She was. It's easy to dismiss her as unhinged and downright insane but her intuition and brilliance beat out anything... well, crazy she might do. Zero Dark Thirty could easily have been about her. Claire Danes also plays the balance between strength and vulnerability that Carrie emotes brilliantly.
I will admit to doing a little fist pump with a “yesss!” when Olivia told her lover to earn her. She is far from perfect. She has fallen into what I think is a rather toxic relationship, despite how hot their hookups are. But the joy I get from watching Olivia is watching her struggle with the knowledge of how messed up her love life is. And she fights back. The cherry on top of the wonderful sundae is that her love life is also not the only thing of importance to her. She is a fixer, a damn good one, and even on her most tumultuous days, she still kicks major ass. Also, it would be stupid of me not to mention that she is one of very, very few strong minority female leads on television right now and it is wonderful to see.
"Everyone’s not me."

“I’m not a toy you can play with when you’re bored or lonely or horny; I am not the girl the guy gets at the end of the movie; I am not a fantasy. If you want me, earn me! Until then, we are done.”
