The Top Ten Women on Television of 2013

Annie Edison - Community

Laurie Keller - Cougar Town

Annie is a character that if played wrong, would come off as pedantic, pretentious and downright annoying. Because she’s played right (you could even say perfectly, by Alison Brie), Annie becomes a fleshed out over-achieving, naive, brilliant, sweet, and slightly dangerous character. Annie tries hard and will not accept defeat, even if that means turning the study room upside down to find a missing pen. She’s confident, fiercely intelligent and is dedicated to her friends. Plus, if you need a diorama in a pinch, Annie’s your girl.

Sometimes I make the mistake of thinking that strong portrayals of women need to include certain things: incredible levels of intelligence, some sort of smackdown of misogyny, often small levels of bitchiness. Laurie is just pure unselfconscious life. Her nickname is ‘Jellybean,’ she has countless one night stands, and the story of her life is ripe for mocking. But she doesn’t let any of it faze her. Instead she just enjoys whatever she pleases and brings crazy amounts of hilarity and joy into the world.

"I'm not a relaxed person, Britta. I think ahead. I prepare. I don't improvise my life like Caroline Decker, who probably has really bad credit and an unfinished mermaid tattoo."

“If Matt Damon weren’t married, and if he weren’t a movie star, and if he lived in this town… I really think we would date.”
